Alan MacKay joined 3i in 1987 and was appointed to the Board of 3i plc in 1994. He was 3i Investments plc development director for Europe, then managing director of 3i Nordic plc leading the acquisition and integration of listed industrial holding company Atle AB. He was a senior partner in 3i Buyouts Immediately prior to becoming founding partner of Quoted Private Equity.

His public company track record spans fifteen years and includes the minority buy-in of Clyde Blowers plc, the buyout and IPO of Workplace Technologies plc, and he is currently non-executive director of Character Group plc, MDY Healthcare plc, and Phibro Animal Health Corporation, all listed in London.

Alan MacKay is global lead partner of 3i Healthcare, which comprises 30 healthcare investors in Asia, Europe and the US. 3i Heralthcare recent (2008) investments include Quintiles, Alpharma API, Ultralase, and Phibro Animal Health. Away from Quoted Private Equity and Healthcare he is chairman of central and eastern Europe specialist investor 3TS Capital Partners, and is a member of the public equities Strategic Advisory Board at SVG.

He holds a degree in law, a Masters in enterprise economics, and has diverse business qualifications including the AMP from INSEAD.
