First Pan-Asian Independent Reinsurer
“3i’s rich global expertise and network adds real value to our business. We can leverage the team’s diverse skillset and experience in this space and across the sectors we are looking at.”
3i led the investment into Asia Capital Reinsurance Group (ACR), contributing US$200m of the $620m deal. ACR is the first start-up with an A-credit rating in Asia. The business will write property and casualty insurance exclusively in the Asian market and has been registered as a reinsurer by the Monetary Authority of Singapore. The business is 3i’s biggest investment in the region to-date and its largest growth capital deal in 2006.
Enormous Market Potential
The burgeoning economies in Asia and significant investment in large capital projects and valuable assets is driving the need for more complex, specialist and tailored insurance requirements. ACR’s core team is well established and has significant networks and experience in Asia across all the sectors in which they intend to write reinsurance. These networks span insurers, brokers and the owners of large assets. This, combined with ACR’s local presence and focus and deep technical knowledge and a proven ability to assess and price risk, will be the core strengths that will allow ACR to penetrate the market.
Based in Singapore, ACR will focus on speciality lines of reinsurance in the large risks segment such as aviation, marine, energy, large infrastructure and engineering projects across Asia. ACR’s objective is to deliver to clients an unprecedented combination of strong Asian dedicated capacity, global underwriting standards and expertise as well as in-depth knowledge of the needs and dynamics of Asian insurance markets.
John Tan, ACR’s CEO, said:
“3i’s rich global expertise and network adds real value to our business. We can leverage the team’s diverse skillset and experience in this space and across the sectors we are
looking at. They have worked with similar businesses in the US and Europe. As a result they were key in developing our business model and finding a great Chairman in
Thaddeus Beczak. Their commitment combined with a powerful international resource, is a great asset for our business.”
Added Value
3i’s international financial services expertise was a key factor in shaping the formation of this business. We also used the 3i network to identify and recruit ACR Chairman, Thaddeus Beczak. 3i also presented Chris Rowlands, Managing Partner, with extensive PE and financial services experience, who will join the board.
