Nature of Business
Café y Té (C&T) is the market-leading chain of coffee shops and cafeterias in Spain. The business was founded in 1993 by current Chairman, Gustavo Ron, and is headquartered in Barcelona. C&T currently operates c100 owned outlets and 30 franchised outlets across Spain and offers customers specialist coffees and teas, alongside good quality food.
Investment Overview
3i invested in C&T in 2006, taking a 47% share in the company partly via the acquisition of Catalana d’Iniciativa’s 29% shareholding. We have a wealth of experience in the European food and drink consumer market and are currently also invested in the UK’s Giraffe chain of family-friendly restaurants.
We saw C&T as a clear leader in the Spanish market with plenty of potential for further expansion consolidating a market mainly made of independent individual outlets. Our investment has allowed the business to continue its consistent organic growth, principally through further roll-out of outlets, C&T had 69 outlets when 3i invested. Since our investment, C&T has invested over €20m in new outlets and has created more than 500 new jobs.
