Consumers, eager for lower cost and better functionality, are rapidly shifting from circuit switched to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. At the same time, these consumers are increasingly using their mobile phones as their primary telephone. These factors point to a market for mobile VoIP technologies that will exceed the fixed VoIP market over the next five years.

“From our earliest days, Sonim has been an industry leader in developing IP Multimedia Subsystem-based, end-to-end carrier grade VoIP solutions for mobile networks,” says Bob Plaschke, CEO, Sonim. “Sonim is the first company to bring to market a complete end-to-end, Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) compliant, VoIP solution. A perfect example is our Push to Talk application (PTT), which is a lower cost and better functionality version of Nextel’s hugely popular PTT application.

” Understanding what consumers want is a key driver to Sonim’s approach to product design. “One example is small/medium businesses (SME),” says Plaschke “They have communication requirements that PTT can uniquely solve, such as instant communication, ad-hoc group calls, and presence/availability status, all on a mobile handset. We’ve now enhanced our PTT client/server solution to make it even more attractive to SME customers.”

These enhancements include the Sonim Desktop Client, incorporating PTT with special dispatch functionality on PC platforms, and a Sonim designed semi-ruggedized PTT handset.

“Creating dispatch functionality on a PC is just the beginning of how we will extend our mobile VoIP expertise across unlicensed wireless and fixed networks, to enable truly convergent applications. We will continue to leverage our expertise, IP and patents to develop market ready VoIP applications that will be attractive to wireless operators and technology providers,” says Plaschke.
